"Das erste Opfer in einem Krieg ist die Wahrheit", heißt es, und um die mannigfaltigen Formen der Vermittlung kriegerischer Vorgänge in den Medien geht es in dieser Historischen Kontextualisierung.
Betrachtet werden Konflikte vom Ersten Weltkrieg über den Zweiten Weltkrieg, Korea und Vietnam, die Kriege in Nahost bis hin zu den militärischen Einsätzen unter deutscher Beteiligung wie im Kosovo und in Afghanistan.
Als Medien dienen traditionelle Schlachtgemälde, Fotos, Dokumentar- und Spielfilme, journalistische Reportagen, literarische Bewältigungsversuche und Erzeugnisse der Propagandaeinheiten und "eingebetteten" Kriegskorrespondenten. Auch Selbstzeugnisse aus den Reihen des Militärs sollen in die Analyse einbezogen werden.
