For a long time, the sociology of work assumed that labor markets were nationally constituted. However, today's globally networked world of work is increasingly characterized by phenomena that break the boundaries of the nation state and generate new global and transnational configurations of work and labor markets. Transnational labor migration of so called mobile professionals, be it managers, consultants, academics, journalists, development experts, artists, or other highly skilled professions has mainly contributed to such a ”cosmopolitisation of work” (Beck 2009).
In this seminar we will look at mobile professionals from three different angels:
1) We will look at the transnational labour markets these mobile professionals move in and the processes under which such transnational patterns emerge and are socially constituted.
2) We will look at the work and the mobile careers of such professionals and
3) we will look at the transnational occupational cultures that emerge in such transnational labour markets.
Seminar language is English.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
