Representations of science and of scientist have been a popular topic in literature for a very long time. From the fictional characters of Victor Frankenstein (1818) over Dr. Jekyll (1886) and Professor Van Helsing (1897) to the physicist Michael Beard in Ian McEwan’s recent novel Solar (2010), literary works have traced, discussed, and evaluated scientific and technological developments often in highly critical fashion. At the same time, different academic disciplines (e.g. psychology, linguistics, cognitive science) have attempted to study literature and the act of reading from a scientific point of view.
This class will engage in an introductory exploration of the cultural and academic contact zone of science and literature. It will discuss different ways in which literary works engage with science and introduce different scientific approaches to the study of literature.
