"Jede Seele unterwerfe sich den übergeordneten staatlichen Mächten! Denn es ist keine staatliche Macht außer von Gott, und die bestehenden sind von Gott verordnet" (Röm 13,1). Dieser Vers ist eines der wenigen expliziten Aussagen zum Verhältnis von Gott und der staatlichen Herrschaft im Neuen Testament. Doch ist dies nicht die einzige Verhältnisbestimmung, die in der frühjüdischen und neutestamentlichen Literatur zu finden ist. In diesem Seminar soll dieser Text neben anderen in ihrem jeweiligen historischen Kontext behandelt werden, um ein Bild der vielfältigen theologisch-politischen Ansichten im Frühjudentum und im frühen Christentum zu bekommen. Fragen, die an die antiken Texte gestellt werden sollen, sind unter anderem: Wie sollen sich die Herrschenden Gott gegenüber verhalten? Wie sollen sich die Untertanen den Herrschenden gegenüber verhalten? Kommt jede irdische Herrschaft von Gott?
