Locke’s Essay Concerning Human Understanding is, along with Newton’s Principia and Descartes’ Meditations, a founding document of modern European philosophy. It is frequently understood to be the definitive expression of the straightforward empiricism taken for granted in much of British and American culture up to the present day, and it fueled the development of later forms of empiricism (Hume) and rationalism (Leibniz) from whose grip Kant has still not quite managed to release us. A study of the Essay thus brings both historical insight and an understanding of the options available in contemporary Western philosophy. In this course we will start at the beginning and read as much of this text as we can.
