As the sociocultural leg of a double seminar (offered together with "Language and Power" by Marion Schulte),* Language and Power: A Cultural Studies Approach examines the intimate interactions between language and power in the United States and in its interactions with the world at large. As a seminar in the PM3 module, it visits bodies of text where forms of language (dis)empower groups of people, leading either to expression and communication or to forced silencing of voices and eradication of identities. The reading material for the seminar ranges from primary texts such as political commentary, fiction, and news as well as a wide range of secondary material.
* The participants are encouraged to sign up for and take part in the seminar Language and Power that is simultaneously offered in Summer Semester 2019 by Dr Marion Schulte. Participation in both seminars is recommended, but not mandatory.
Those who attend and complete both seminars will have the opportunity to develop research projects at the intersection of the many topics the two seminars engage with.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
