This seminar investigates stylistics as a method of the study of literature in the twentieth century. Reading a text or an oeuvre for style aims at envisioning an object from a global perspective. Frequently, ‘style’ is associated with an author or a certain period in the history of art. Thus, stylistics was established in the nineteenth century as a way of objectifying the individual characteristics of an author’s writings. This manner of approaching texts became obsolete in the twentieth century as a result of the ‘death of the author,’ as proclaimed by Roland Barthes. The seminar consequently addresses the question of whether stylistics has been perpetuated in the twentieth century in spite of the lack of an emphatic idea of the author. This train of thought eventually leads up to a discussion of current efforts in the digital analysis of style.

Thema des Seminars ist Stilistik als literaturwissenschaftliche Methode im 20. Jahrhundert. Im weitesten Sinne geht es bei einer stilistischen Lektüre von literarischen Texten darum, einen Text oder ein Werk als Ganzes in den Blick zu bekommen. Häufig wird Stil im Hinblick auf einen Autor oder eine kunstgeschichtliche Epoche bestimmt. So etablierte sich die Stilistik im 19. Jahrhundert als eine Möglichkeit der Objektivierung der individuellen Schreibart eines Autors. Diese Art des Umgangs mit Texten wurde im 20. Jahrhundert mit dem von Roland Barthes proklamierten ‚Tod des Autors’ hinfällig. Im Anschluss daran stellt sich die Frage, wie die stilistische Methode in der Literaturtheorie des 20. Jahrhunderts in der Distanzierung von einem emphatischen Autorkonzept fortgeschrieben und weiterentwickelt wurde, bzw. ob Stilistik für die zeitgenössische Literaturwissenschaft – man denke etwa an Stilometrie mit digitalen Methoden – noch eine Rolle spielt.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

The seminar discussion and reading will be in English. The reading consists in theoretical texts which will be made available as scans.
For the Studienleistung, students will be asked to give a short presentation of ca. 10 minutes in which they recapitulate the discussion of a previous session. As a Prüfungsleistung, students will write a term paper of approximately 12 pages (Hausarbeit). The seminar can be taken in order to fulfill the requirement of a Lektüreschwerpunkt.

Lektüregrundlage sind literaturtheoretische Texte, die als Scans zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Das Seminar (Lektüre und Diskussion) wird auf Englisch durchgeführt.
Die Studienleistung besteht in einem Kurz-Referat (ca. 10 Minuten), in dem die Diskussion einer vorangegangenen Sitzung zusammengefasst wird. Als Prüfungsleistung verfassen die Studierenden eine Hausarbeit (ca. 12 Seiten). Das Seminar kann wahlweise mit Lektüreschwerpunkt absolviert werden.
