This course focuses on development politics in the regional context of the Americas by applying comparative sociological-historical perspectives. The course is divided into two parts. The first part discusses contemporary development policies that relate, for example, to the implementation of the Agenda 2030 in North-, Central-, and South America. The second part sets these policies into a broader historical context to illustrate how the meaning ascribed to actors engaged in development politics as well as the relevance of concepts, such as ethnicity and environment, have changed over time. Under consideration of different cases, the course looks particularly at actors and discourses to discuss and explain the evolution of development politics in the Americas.
This course is open for students enrolled in the Master programmes of History and InterAmerican Studies. We will mostly discuss literature from the field of development studies. All students should be able to understand academic texts written in English.
