Das Seminar dient dem Überblick über die Medien der griechisch-römischen Antike in all ihren Erscheinungsformen und ihrer jeweiligen Wirkungsmacht, gerade auch auf das politische und gesellschaftliche Leben der damaligen Zeit. Aufgeräumt werden soll dabei auch mit der These, wonach das Aufkommen sog. Massenmedien erst ein Phänomen neuerer Zeit, mithin des 20. Jahrhunderts gewesen sei. Ebenso wird dem zweifellos bedeutendsten Medienwechsel, i.e. von der Mündlichkeit zur Schriftlichkeit, nachgespürt und zugleich die frühen Phasen der Medienkritik in den Blick genommen.
