William James gilt zugleich als Vater der amerikanischen Psychologie -- er hielt u.a. die ersten Kurse zur experimentellen Psychologie in den USA - ebenso wie als einer der Begründer des Pragmatismus (neben C.S. Peirce und J. Dewey). Seine philosophischen Thesen – nicht zuletzt die psychologisch motivierte These, es gebe ein Recht zu entscheiden, was man glauben wolle („The Will to Believe“) - sind bei Freunden wie Gegnern strittig: Er nannte sich - wie Peirce - Pragmatist, woraufhin Peirce seine eigene Position in „Pragmatizismus“ umbenannte (ein Wort, dass „zu häßlich sei, um es zu rauben“). Bertrand Russell wandte gegen James’ Wahrheitstheorie ein, diese verpflichte James anzunehmen, daß „Santa Claus exists“. Simon Blackburn führt die Kritik u.a. auf James’ Sicht der Philosophie zurück: „He believed that philosophies expressed large currents of feeling as much as intellectual theorems, so that exactitude is not a particular virtue, and refuting a philosopher by seizing upon and refuting some statement is like trying to divert a river by planting a stick in it.“

Eine Quelle für James’ oft ungewöhnliche Positionen sind seine psychologischen Forschungen. Das Seminar gibt eine Einführung in James’ Philosophie, besonders seiner Erkenntnistheorie und Philosophie des Geistes, und deren Ursprüngen und Beziehungen zur Psychologie.
