Über das Wesen des Kalten Krieges wurde seit dessen Beginn kontrovers gestritten, seine Geschichte wurde auf höchst verschiedene Art und Weise interpretiert, während der Konflikt noch andauerte. Nach dem Zusammenbruch der kommunistischen Herrschaftssysteme Osteuropas wurde der Kalte Krieg zu einem wichtigen internationalen Forschungsfeld, das viele verschiedene Perspektiven versammelt. In der Veranstaltung soll ein Grundverständnis dafür vermittelt werden, wie politische Kontexte auf die Geschichtsschreibung einwirken, wie stark sich wissenschaftliche Interpretationen im Laufe der Zeit verändern können und welche Interessen und Forschungsansätze in der Geschichtsschreibung des Kalten Krieges wirksam wurden und werden. Dafür werden exemplarische Texte vom Beginn des Kalten Krieges ca. 1947 bis zur Gegenwart besprochen.

Die Geschichtsschreibung des Kalten Krieges findet zum größten Teil in englischer Sprache statt. Teilnahmevoraussetzung ist daher die Bereitschaft zur regelmäßigen Lektüre englischsprachiger Texte.
