In September 1939 the British Ministry of Information was founded, which controlled how news of the war was conveyed to the British public. It also coordinated the making of feature films that were supposed to support the war effort by disseminating British and Allied propaganda in entertainment form. The deployment of women in the Forces, the relations between the sexes during wartime and the conflicts that arose afterwards, when men returned from the fronts to their families and their jobs, were some of the recurring themes in these films. In this class, we will analyse some of these films to see how they negotiate the fundamental upheavals to family lives and gender roles during the war and after.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

Preparatory homework pieces or presentations, depending on class size.
You will have to watch all the films we discuss in your spare time. Some obligatory(!) communal viewing will be arranged for films not easily accessible.
Please note: These films were designed and intended to make a contribution to the war effort; they are propaganda films in which "the Germans" and "the Nazis" are the enemies and portrayed, in some cases, in a satirical and farcical mode. We will discuss these things in terms of representation and discourse; not in political or historiographical terms. We will not discuss Nazi ideologies as such, and on no account will I tolerate right-wing or apologist slogans in my classrooms. Anyone who insists on making right-wing or national-socialist statements may be removed from the classroom by the Security Service of the university.
