Mit kaum einer andern Landschaft wird das romantische Bild der selbstgenügsamen, arbeitsamen, naturnahen Dorfgemeinschaft, wie sie für die vorindustrielle Zeit typisch war, verbunden wie mit Masuren/Ostpreußen. Das änderte sich auch nicht nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, als Masuren Teil Polens wurde: die nostalgischen Erinnerungen der Heimatvertriebenen, aber eben auch die Trauerarbeit um die verlorene Heimat in der schöngeistigen Literatur (z.B. S. Lenz, A. Surminski) verstanden es, das romantisierende Image bis heute zu konservieren.
Im Seminar werden interdisziplinär Fragen der Sozialgeographie und Literaturwissenschaft zusammengeführt. Zu diesem Zweck soll Literatur zur geographischen Landeskunde, Volkskunde, Reisebeschreibungen, die wichtigsten Masurenromane, eventuell auch Filme analysiert werden.
