220166 Empires, Nations, and States in Global History (K) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

This course provides students with an overview of modern global history, through an examination of political shifts between the Atlantic revolutions of the 18th century to the early 21st century. Through primary sources, as well as both foundational and recent work by historians of imperialism, colonialism, nationalism, international law, and other fields, students will examine key historical processes, including imperial expansion, colonial governance, resistance movements, anti-colonialism, postcolonial state-making, and international order. Students will also be trained in analysing and evaluating approaches to the study of these topics, through short exercises designed to build skills in historical methods. Through the analysis of wide-ranging primary sources, including state records, newspaper articles, letters, legal documents, films, novels, and speeches, students will learn to read primary sources critically alongside field-defining conceptual approaches to the study of modern global history.
