Die Untersuchung "Ideologie und Utopie" aus dem Jahr 1929 gilt als eines der Hauptwerke von Karl Mannheim (1893-1947). Mannheims Ideologiekritik ist eine der frühesten, die in den Theorien des Sozialen formuliert, dann aber weitgehend marginalisiert wurden. Dabei ist sein Ansatz ein Vorläufer der praxeologischen Erkenntnisweise und bildet den prinzipiellen Bruch mit dem substanzialistischen Denken, der für die Sozial- und Erziehungswissenschaften bis heute von großer Bedeutung ist. Die Vorsicht gegenüber der eigenen normativen Verstrickung ist ein Merkmal des Denkens von Mannheim. Diesem nachzuspüren und es in der akademischen Debatte der 1920er Jahre zu verorten, in denen die Geisteswissenschaften ihre maßgebliche Prägung erhalten haben, ist Aufgabe der Arbeit im Seminar. Es wird mit Originaltexten und der Sekundärliteratur gearbeitet. Das Buch "Ideologie und Utopie" wird gelesen und seine Verfügbarkeit wird bei Seminarbeginn vorausgesetzt. Für die Studienleistung müssen die Grundlagenliteratur erarbeitet und Diskussionsergebnisse in Reflexionssitzungen vorgestellt werden. Die Möglichkeit für eine Prüfungsleistung ist vorhanden.
