This course will provide students with knowledge and understanding of inclusive and special education in New Zealand.
Topics will cover New Zealand’s history, culture, policy and practice of general and inclusive education, including the influence of the Treaty of Waitangi. Strategies used to support a range of learners with additional needs will also be examined. Students will reflect on the role of parents, family and the diverse professional workforce in the provision of inclusive education.
The course will also position the New Zealand context within the broader global context. Students will research and critically evaluate current and past practices, and debates in inclusive education.
Learning Outcomes
Students completing this course will be able to:
1. Understand and describe the New Zealand general and inclusive educational context – historical and current.
2. Review and understand literature of particular issues and debates in relation to inclusive education theory and practice in New Zealand and globally.
3. Critically evaluate inclusive and special education teaching strategies
4. Understand and critically reflect on the role of family and educational professionals involved in the provision of inclusive education.
