„Was hat Athen mit Jerusalem zu tun?“ Diese Frage Tertullians ist für das mittelalterliche Denken in Europa charakteristisch, dessen Vertreterinnen und Vertreter sich um eine Vermittlung zwischen griechischer Philosophie und christlicher Religion, zwischen Wissen und Glauben bemühen:
Die Texte der antiken Philosophen werden von der christlichen Glaubenserfahrung her gelesen; der Glaube wiederum wird anhand der antiken Philosophie reflektiert. Im Seminar soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, welche philosophischen Konsequenzen sich aus den theologischen Prämissen des Christentums insbesondere für die Ethik und die politische Philosophie ergeben – wobei uns auch das Problem des Verhältnisses von Theologie und Philosophie selbst beschäftigen wird.
Die systematischen Fragen, um die es vorrangig gehen soll, sind die nach Ursprung und Erkenntnis von Werten und Normen und nach den Kriterien christlicher Herrschaft.
Die mittelalterliche Philosophie lässt sich als Gespräch zwischen heidnischen und christlichen Denkerinnen und Denkern begreifen, und wir werden uns nicht nur mit den Inhalten dieses Gesprächs beschäftigen, sondern auch mit dessen Methode: der scholastischen disputatio, deren Funktionsweise wir im Seminar gemeinsam ausprobieren werden.
Bei Interesse werden wir eine Tagesexkursion zu einem mittelalterlichen Kloster unternehmen. So können wir uns die Welt des Mittelalters auf verschiedenen Wegen erschließen und an der Uni hoffentlich auch wieder mehr Gemeinschaft erleben!
