Since the 1950s electronic, digital computing devices of various kind have become part of an increasing number of activities in the private and public sphere. Many actual, expected or alleged transformations have been linked to this development, and often subsumed under terms like "computer revolution", "information age" or "digital turn". Questioning this simple, linear narrative historians with different backgrounds, interests and methods have highlighted the variety of 20th century computing practices. These studies offered diverging reconstructions and interpretations both of the diffusion of practices and concepts of computing and of their relationship to earlier notions, methods and technologies. In view of this variety it seems appropriate to speak of "histories of computing", as the historian of computing Michael S. Mahoney did. This course will offer an introduction to these histories by sketching their broader framework and discussing chosen episodes and relevant historiographic perspectives.
