Die Grundthese von Ulrich Becks Gesellschaftstheorie besagt, dass es in den 1960er/1970er Jahren zu einer fundamentalen epochalen Zäsur in der Entwicklung moderner Gesellschaft gekommen ist (von der Industriegesellschaft zur Risikogesellschaft bzw. von der ersten Moderne zur zweiten Moderne). Das Seminar untersucht anhand von ausgewählten Beck-Texten, wie sich diese Zäsur in einzelnen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen manifestiert (z. B. gesellschaftliches Naturverhältnis, Klasse und Schicht, Familie, Geschlechterbeziehungen, Politik, Wissenschaft, Arbeitslosigkeit, Globalisierung). Die Leitfrage ist, wie Beck die These von der epochalen Zäsur empirisch und theoretisch begründet.
