Der Begriff des Volkes ist einerseits grundlegend für die Moderne Politische Theorie, bildet er doch eine der Voraussetzungen des modernen Demokratiedenkens. Andererseits gehört er, wie anhaltende Auseinandersetzungen in Theorie und Praxis der Demokratie zeigen, zu den grundlegend umstrittenen Konzepten. Zeitdiagnostisch ist der Streit um den Begriff des Volkes zudem eine der zentralen politischen Auseinandersetzungen unserer Gegenwartsgesellschaften, lässt sich in ihnen doch eine erschreckende Wiederbelebung nationalistischer Volksbegriffe beobachten.
Das Seminar dient der Lektüre und Diskussion ideengeschichtlicher und zeitgenössischer Auseinandersetzungen mit der unabgeschlossenen, ja vermutlich unabschließbaren Frage danach, was ein Volk ist.
