Der Kurs vermittelt kritische Theorie anhand einer Auseinandersetzung mit den Vertretern der frühen kritischen Theorie (insbesondere Adorno, Horkheimer und Marcuse), mit der sprachanalytischen Wendung (bei Habermas) und mit jüngeren Ansätzen wie der Theorie der Anerkennung (Honneth) sowie der Soziologie der Kritik (Boltanski). Ein zentrales Augenmerk liegt auf der Frage, ob sich kritische Theorie als ein eigenständiges Projekt von anderen Strömungen in den Sozialwissenschaften unterscheiden lässt.
