Das Seminar befasst sich zum einen mit Determinanten gesundheitsrelevanten Sportreibens auf verschiedenen Ebenen (z.B. Individuum/Mikroebene, Wohnumgebung/Mesoebene, regionale bzw. nationale Ebene/Makroebene) und baut damit auf der Vorlesung zu den soziologischen Fragen des Sports auf. Überdies beschäftigst sich das Seminar mit gesundheitlichen Wirkungen von Sport und körperlicher Aktivität. Dabei werden nicht nur Effekte auf die physische Gesundheit (z.B. Abwesenheit von Krankheiten), sondern auch auf die psychische Gesundheit (z.B. Wohlbefinden, Lebenszufriedenheit, Glück) thematisiert. Neben der inhaltlichen Diskussion liegt der Schwerpunkt auf methodischen Aspekten, welche relevant sind, um aussagekräftige Schlussfolgerungen treffen zu können. Die thematische Diskussion erfolgt eingebettet in die Richtlinien der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) und internationale Dokumente mit gesundheitspolitischen Zielen. Aufgrund der internationalen Ausrichtung des Themas wird im Seminar überwiegend auf englischsprachige Literatur zurückgegriffen.
