220058 The Roman Inquisition in Early Modern Age (S) (WiSe 2015/2016)

The seminar examines the role of Roman Inquisition in the early modern period as a religious, political and legal institution in Italy and Europe. Paradigms as "confessionalisation" and categories such as "social discipline" will be revised with reference to the deep historical debate (old and modern) on Roman Inquisition and Council of Trent in connection with Church's documents and the archival sources. In fact, one of the main gol of the seminar is the understanding of Inquisitorial system, its law, the canonic procedures and the real praxis of government of the justice and censorship strategy. This module aims to furnish us the knowledge of the concrete behavior of Holy Office in central and peripheral offices – between Rome and its local churches – comparing Roman orders with local trials like those for "crimes" of love magic-sorcery, religious dissent, heresy or jurisdictional issues.
