Die Veranstaltung behandelt am Beispiel des Mittelalters die verschiedenen Versuche, sich mit der jeweiligen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart geschichtlich denkend auseinanderzusetzen. Zuerst werden der Gegenstand von Geschichte, Geschichtsschreibung als Text, Geschichte als Wissenschaft und die Adressaten von Geschichte erörtert. Sodann werden in zeitlicher Abfolge führende Autoren vom Ende des Altertums bis zum Beginn der Neuzeit besprochen.
