Die Stadt Florenz, die bereits in der Antike gegründet wurde, wird im 14. und 15. Jh. zum Ausgangspunkt der Renaissance und leitet den Aufbruch Europas in die Moderne ein: Gelehrte lösen sich von den Lehrmeinungen des Mittelalters und entdecken die griechisch-römische Antike in Literatur, Kunst, Bauarchitektur und Geistesgeschichte neu. Inspiriert von dem Wissen der Antike, gelangt man zu neuen Sichten und Einsichten bezüglich der Welt und des Menschen. Inmitten der florentinischen Eliten gewinnt die wohlhabende Bankiers-Familie der Medici im 15. und 16. Jh. immer mehr an Macht und dominiert schließlich das kontinuierlich wachsende Handels- und Finanzentrum am Fluß Arno. Daneben steigen die Medici zu den bedeutendsten Förderern von Kunst und Kultur auf, nachdem Florenz bereits ab ca. 1400 sukzessive zum Zentrum innovativer Architekur, Malerei und Bildhauerei geworden war und die führenden florentinischen Familien die Baumeister und Künstler mit lukrativen Aufträgen überschüttet hatten. Auf diese Weise gelangte Florenz, das damals wohl nur etwa 50.000 Einwohner zählte, zu höchster kultureller Blüte und war jahrhundertelang eine der reichsten und bedeutendsten Metropolen Europas.
