In public discourse and the academic literature alike, references to narrative as an element of social worlds are pervasive. Collective and individual identities are often depicted as defined by narratives, political actors and corporate entities are found to promote competing narratives, and the narrative construction of reality is a well-established theme in social theory. Social and cultural anthropology has a rich history of exploring various facets of narrative as a cultural phenomenon and an "ethnomethod" in social interaction. This seminar aims to explore anthropological perspectives on narrative within culture and society. Utilizing literature that broaches the topic in contexts around the world, we will particularly emphasize relevant materials from the Americas. While our primary focus is on narrative as an object of ethnographic study, the seminar will also offer some advanced methodological impulses.
