Der hohe Urbanisierungsgrad prägte entscheidend das Imperium Romanum. Die Stadt zentralisierte nicht nur das administrative, sondern auch das religiöse, ökonomische und vor allem gesellschaftliche Leben. Hier wohnten auf relativ engen Raum Freie und Unfreie, Aristokraten und Abgehörige der "plebs", Reiche und Arme, Fremde und Einheimische zusammen, die eine Vielzahl an Gottheiten verehrten, unterschiedliche Berufe ausübten, Thermen und Theater besuchten oder sich in Vereinen ("collegia") zusammenschlossen. Insbesondere Inschriften vermitteln ein lebendiges Bild der städtische Lebenswelt. Die Veranstaltung möchte daher sowohl einen Einblick in die römische Stadt bieten als auch in die Lesung und Interpretation von epigraphischen Zeugnissen einführen.
