Die Vorlesung behandelt den strategischen Umgang mit Zeit in der Architektur des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Ausgangspunkt sind kulturgeschichtliche Konzepte, die Kunst als unmittelbaren Ausdruck der jeweiligen Gegenwart verstehen. Bezeichnenderweise etablierten sich diese Konzepte gerade in dem Moment, in dem diese Unmittelbarkeit in der zeitgenössischen Wahrnehmung verloren zu gehen drohte. In der Vorlesung geht es um historische Versuche, diese Unmittelbarkeit wiederherzustellen, indem der Faktor Zeit manipuliert wurde – durch die Steuerung realer Entwurfs- und Ausführungsprozesse, aber auch durch die Darstellung von Zeit (etwa im Baustil). Dabei erweist sich der strategische Umgang mit Zeit als verbindendes Element zwischen Historismus und Moderne.
