In the preface of his groundbreaking study “Shylock. Four Hundred Years in the Life of a Legend” (1992), John Gross hints to the fact that there are in total only five scenes in William Shakespeare’s “romantic comedy” “The Merchant of Venice” (first published in 1600) wherein the Jewish merchant Shylock has an appearance. Gross states that Shylock as stereotype underwent numerous mutations which since then inspired the “imagination of the world”. Shylock belongs likewise to folk history, mass psychology, politics, and popular culture. This characteristic predestines the figure as an object for historical, theoretical, as well as philological approaches of media studies. The seminar therefore reexamines the popular history of the dissemination of this ambivalent (anti-)Jewish figure, to which Gross and others have contributed a lot, from a media studies perspective. Focusing on an analysis of the text of Shakespeare’s most controversial play, as well as on a variety of exemplary adaptations in different media from then until now, the seminar will also reexamine and apply different theoretical approaches to the intermedial representations of this (in)famous character.

(Im Vorwort seiner grundlegenden Studie „Shylock. Four Hundred Years in the Life of a Legend“ (1992) weist John Gross darauf hin, dass es lediglich fünf Szenen seien, in denen der jüdische Kaufmann Shylock in Shakespeares „romantic comedy“ „The Merchant of Venice“ (erstmals 1600 gedruckt) auftaucht. Als Stereotyp habe Shylock zahllose Mutationen erfahren und so die „imagination of the world“ beschäftigt; er gehöre gleichermaßen zur Geschichte der Folklore, der Massenpsychologie, der Politik und der Populärkultur. Diese Besonderheit prädestiniert die Figur, die sich dabei vielfach vom Stück, in dem sie keineswegs die zentrale Rolle spielt, gelöst hat, als Gegenstand für medienhistorische, -theoretische und -philologische Fragestellungen. Pointiert gesprochen: Ohne dauernde Medienwechsel oder mediale Verknüpfungen wäre die Geschichte Shylocks nicht denkbar. Es bietet sich daher an, die von Gross und anderen untersuchte populäre Verbreitungsgeschichte der ambivalenten Figur aus medienwissenschaftlicher Perspektive in den Blick zu nehmen. Ausgehend von einer intensiven Beschäftigung mit dem veröffentlichten Text von Shakespeares kontroversestem Drama, dem „Merchant of Venice“, sowie ausgewählten medialen Adaptationen und Transformationen, sollen medienwissenschaftliche Zugänge und Perspektiven in kritischer Aneignung reflektiert werden.)
