The course offers a comprehensive survey of positivist/mainstream and of critical theoretical approaches in the study of contemporary media and mass communication and an investigation of their influence on social, political, and economic change in the Americas. The class will discuss the most prominent positivist and critical theoretical approaches about media in North American and Latin America and will distinguish their differences in how they conceive and study the uses and effects of mass communication.
