Das Vorbereitungsseminar führt in die Unterrichtsplanung ein und baut hier auf dem Berufsfeldpraktikum des Bachelors auf, sodass jede/r Studierende eine Unterrichtsreihe und -stunde vorbereiten kann. Gleichzeitig geht es um die Kriterien guten Geschichtsunterrichts, die anhand eines Kompetenzmodells vorgestellt werden, das auch als Grundlage für die Vorbereitung der Studienprojekte im Praxissemesters dient. Dazu wird in die entsprechende Methode der qualitativen und quantitativen Inhaltsanalyse (Mayring) und konkret in atlas.ti eingeführt, um unter anderem die Lernprogression von SchülerInnen im Geschichtsunterricht erheben und interpretieren zu können. Dies geschieht dann im Praxissemester selbst. Im Vorbereitungsseminar wird mit bereits vorliegenden Studien gearbeitet.
