230341 Historia del futuro: visiones de América Latina y América del Norte / History of the Future: Visions of North and Latin America Seminar (S) (SoSe 2017)

Contents, comment

The point of departure of the seminar is that, as being known as the New World, the continent called America distinguishes itself form all other parts of the world as being basically of a temporal essence. From the beginning on, America imposes a relation of antiquity and novelty in European thinking. The idea is that American novelty does not only consist of being unknown for Europeans but that it rather refers to its forthcoming character. Many different notions of future flourish with regard to America: they range from a future continent (one that still is not what it is supposed to be, having neither present nor past) to a continent of the future (as an exclusive space of future relegating the other parts of the world to the past) and even to views of a global future that changes everything. In class will be discussed texts from different epochs in an exemplary manner in order to study the diverse re-interpretations of future from the colonial period up to the 20th century. The question also is how the American future is envisioned from the North and from the South and in what way its conceptions match or differ in the different parts of the continent.
