230314 Shakespeare's Problem Comedies (S) (SoSe 2017)

Contents, comment

The term "Shakespeare's problem plays" was coined in the late 19th century for those among his plays that deal with an explicit moral problem or dilemma (like: Should a nun prostitute herself in order to save her brother's life?). The term came to be applied to all those of his plays that pose a "problem" to modern readers and audiences because we don't know what to make of them, or because they make us too uncomfortable. In this seminar we will look at The Taming of the Shrew, Much Ado About Nothing, Measure for Measure, Cymbeline.
