Staaten, Schulen, Universitäten, Publikationen, Tennisspieler, Fußballclubs, Musiker, Künstler, Songs, Blogger und Verbrecher: Was „gerankt“ werden kann, so scheint es, wird auch gerankt. In der sozialwissenschaftlichen Literatur sind Rankings bisher vor allem normativ betrachtet, d.h. kritisiert oder anwendungsorientiert beobachtet worden. Die Lehrforschung soll dagegen Gelegenheit bieten, Rankings als Forschungsgegenstand in den Blick zu nehmen und soziologisch zu untersuchen. Als Forschungsfragen kommen in Betracht: Wann entstehen Ranking in unterschiedlichen Feldern? Wie werden sie produziert und institutionalisiert? Welche Effekte lassen sich ihnen zuschreiben? Welche gesellschaftlichen Normen und Wertvorstellungen werden von Rankings vorausgesetzt, verkörpert oder unterstützt? Für die Lehrforschungsprojekte können alle empirischen Erscheinungsformen von Rankings in Betracht kommen: von Universitätsrankings über Staatenrankings bis zu TripAdvisor.
