In this project the analysis of a new kind of image data will be addressed, digital marine image series showing geological structures. The students will implement and test different algorithms for image segmentation to outline and quantify poly-metallic nodules on the sea bed. To this end, the nodules need to be detected and outlines using algorithms like level set, active contours etc and laser markers need to detected to compute the pixel / cm ratio. The student acquire skills in application-oriented image processing for cutting edge resource assessment problems.
