Alle Lebensvorgänge auf der Erde spielen sich in Ökosystemen ab. Die vorkommenden Lebensgemeinschaften von Organismen sowie deren abiotische Umwelt stehen untereinander in einem komplexen strukturellen und funktionalen Wechselverhältnis. Viele dieser Zusammenhänge sind bis heute kaum geklärt. Andererseits sind fundierte Kenntnisse über sie eine unabdingbare Voraussetzung für glaubwürdige Voraussagen über Auswir-kungen anthropogener Eingriffe in die Natur. In der Vorlesung wird zunächst das Grundwissen über Struktur und Funktion terrestrischer Ökosysteme vermittelt sowie Ansätze der Ökosystemforschung erläutert. Im zweiten Teil werden die terrestrischen Großökosysteme, die Zonobiome der Erde, im Überblick vergleichend behandelt. Dabei wird folgende Gliederung angestrebt: Klima, Boden und Vegetation-Produzenten, Konsumenten, Destruenten: Besondere Ausprägungen durch die Geologie (Pedobiome), durch die Gebirge (Orobiome), Gliederung und Übergangsräume (Zono-Ökotone) zu Nachbarsystemen, Einfluß des Menschen.
