In this course we will consider the interconnections between literature, media and intercultural learning in the EFL classroom. In the first three sessions we will examine the rationale for using literature and film in the foreign language classroom, develop criteria for the selection of suitable texts and explore ways of approaching and exploiting literature (and film) in lessons. From week four each session will include a presentation by two students. We will focus on using poems (weeks 4-6) and children's video (weeks 7-8) plus a novel (weeks 9-11) and a film (weeks 12-14). The final session will be a review session. For details of assessment please see my web-page.
There is a reserved reading shelf for this course (see reading list on my homepage). Students should go down to the library and familiarise themselves with some of these books. (If I mention specific books, they always disappear, unfortunately.)
Note on Presentations
The following requirements for presentations are based on suggestions made by students in previous semesters.
Presenters must prepare a brief one-page handout (not a summary of the entire presentation) and send it to Arne Heinemann, Wiss. Hilfskraft, as an e-mail attachment at least two full days in advance of the seminar to be placed on the homepage.
Seminar members, for their part, must download this handout in advance of the seminar, make themselves familiar with it and bring it to the seminar with them.
Presenters should not repeat the detailed content of the first three sessions at the outset of their presentation.
Presentations should be limited to no more than 30 minutes input plus 15 minutes of tasks/activities for the seminar members to perform (in the role of pupils). (This should leave us time for some discussion and evaluation of the ideas and tasks.)
Presenters may for their own information wish to prepare a brief personal feedback sheet for seminar members to fill out.
