This course will explore ways to diversify the books, genres and text forms used in English language classrooms and beyond. Adopting a self-reflexive and critical approach, we will select texts for academic study, teaching in schools, and reading for pleasure. To this end, we will study the processes of canon formation, the canon debate and approaches to reading for social justice and diversity. You will analyze, explore, and reflect on a wide range of novels, short stories, graphic narratives, and other text forms, while paying special attention to recently banned books in the United States. You should therefore be prepared to read extensively and have an interest in a variety of literary genres.
