Unter französischer Führung landen europäische Truppen 1860 in der osmanischen Provinz Syrien. Sie sind Teil einer „humanitären Intervention“, deren offizielles Ziel es ist, die zuvor ausgebrochenen Massaker gegen christliche Minderheiten zu beenden. Napoleon III. selbst hatte maßgeblich darauf hingewirkt und Frankreich stellt mit Abstand die meisten Soldaten.
Woher kommt der französische Führungsanspruch? Wie wird er historische legitimiert? Welche Rolle spielt Frankreich tatsächlich im Osmanischen Reich? Und wie verändert sich diese bis zum Ausbruch des 1. Weltkriegs?
Ausgehend von den Ereignissen 1860, setzen wir uns im Seminar entlang verschiedener historischer Situationen damit auseinander, wie französische Politiker und Intellektuelle die Rolle Frankreichs im Nahen Osten zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts deuteten.
Dabei steht die Lektüre französischsprachiger Quellen und Literatur im Mittelpunkt. Der Kurs findet voraussichtlich auf Deutsch statt.
