In this class, we will look at various languages, dialects, and accents spoken in Ireland. This includes both of the official languages of the Republic of Ireland, Irish and English, as well as languages or dialects spoken by minorities, for example Ulster Scots or Shelta. We will investigate the form and function of regional and social varieties of these languages and connect them with important social and historical developments.
This course has been organized to run in tandem with the course by Dr Schwarzkopf entitled ”Ireland: England's/Britain's First Colony?”, and students are encouraged to register for both courses in conjunction.
