Non-native speakers outnumber native speakers of English by far. Yet, they have long been neglected as independent users and owners of their respective varieties. Treating English as a global phenomenon and an apparent empowerment of speakers of English as a Foreign Language have even been received as a threat by speakers of English as a Second(ary) Language in the 80s and 90s.
This seminar will cover early confrontations and discourses, various definitions of English as a lingua franca, aspects of language planning and policy, education, language attitude, but also supposedly characteristic phonological, morphosyntactic, and pragmatic features of English as a Lingua Franca.
