Die Elegie in Rom erlebte nur eine kurze, aber äußerst produktive Blütezeit: Properz, Tibull und Ovid sind ihre herausragendsten Vertreter. Jeder von ihnen ist anders, so daß die römische Elegie sich wohl nicht von einer genau entsprechenden griechischen Gattung herleiten läßt. Außerdem gibt es römische Vorbilder: Welche Rolle spielten Catull und Gallus bei der Entstehung dieser Gattung?
Im Kurs sollen die Werke der drei Elegiker sowie ausgewählte Gedichte des Catull im Detail besprochen werden, wobei u.a. folgende Fragen im Mittelpunkt stehen:
- Was zeichnet die Dichter jeweils aus?
- Welche gemeinsamen Charakteristika stellen sich heraus?
- Gibt es eine Entwicklung innerhalb der Gattung?
- Warum wird die römische Elegie oft als Liebeselegie bezeichnet?
- Warum ist die Gattung nur für eine so kurze Zeit produktiv?
Alle Autoren sind bei Reclam in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe zu erhalten: Properz Sämtliche Gedichte, Tibull Elegische Gedichte, Ovid Amores/ Liebesgedichte. Diese sind Textgrundlage des Kurses.
