Dramatische Pferderennen, Blut und Schweiß in der Arena, muskulöse Gladiatoren, die die Mächtigen in Frage stellen und dann heroisch sterben - kaum etwas dominiert unsere Vorstellungen vom Imperium Romanum so sehr wie die Gladiatur und die Spiele. In der Veranstaltung soll es darum gehen, die literarischen Zeugnisse in lateinischer Sprache zu diesem Thema kennenzulernen und zu übersetzen, um die gesellschaftliche sowie auch politische Bedeutung der so römischen Institution Gladiatur kennenzulernen und neben anderen Phänomenen wie Wagenrennen und Theater einzuordnen.
Flankiert wird das Seminar mit archäologischen Zeugnissen und Blicken auf die nachantike Rezeption von Gladiatur, Wagenrennen und Schauspiel vor allem, aber nicht nur, im Film, um einen Überblick zu diesem wichtigen lebensweltlichen Aspekt der römischen Antike und seiner Nachwirkung zu bekommen.
