Das MA-Seminar nimmt die gemeinsame Lektüre von Peter Szondis wirkmächtiger Dissertationsschrift "Theorie des modernen Dramas" (1956) zum Ausgangspunkt einer Auseinandersetzung mit dessen Literaturtheorie sowie Fragen auch zu neueren Dramentheorien nach Szondi. Verfolgt wird so eine doppelte Perspektive: Einerseits sollen die Voraussetzungen von Szondis Theoriebildung rekonstruiert werden, während andererseits nach der gegenwärtigen Relevanz seiner formgeschichtlichen Modellanalysen gefragt wird. Dabei werden von einem close reading der „Theorie des modernen Dramas“ ausgehend auch Fortführungen von Szondis Ansatz in Studien von Hans-Thies Lehmann und Kai Bremer in den Blick genommen. Ziel ist es, die in Szondis Studie niedergelegten Vorstellungen, unter anderem auch im Lichte exemplarischer Produktionen des gegenwärtigen Theaters, kritisch zu evaluieren. Was vermag sein formgeschichtlicher Ansatz aufzuzeigen, was kann er nicht leisten, wo liegen die Grenzen seines Modells? Der Fokus des Seminars umfasst dabei neben der dramentheoretischen auch werkgeschichtliche, literaturtheoretische sowie biografische Aspekte.
