230389 Games as a Method for Linguistic Data Collection (S) (SoSe 2026)

Contents, comment

Linguistic experiments can be incredibly tedious for participants. The quality of elicited data is questionable when the general mood of participants is "click until I am finally released".
Games have proven useful tools to not only create immersive environments in which participants forget the experimental situation and talk very naturally, they also offer precise means of control of the experimental variables, if designed properly.
In this course we will discuss a game created for linguistic experimentation (Betz et al. 2023). We will furthermore discuss the possibility to create a game of our own and conduct an experiment with it within this class. Finally we discuss the statistical methods employed in Betz et al. 2023 and general considerations regarding stats for linguistic game experiments.

Requirements for participation, required level

Fundamental knowledge of linguistics is required.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

Apart from fundamental linguistics knowledge, it is helpful, although not necessary to have a basic understanding of statistical methods. A general interest in strategic thinking, either in game context or other contexts is beneficial. Active participation and presence is expected.
