People in face to face interaction communicate multimodally, combining speech with nonverbal actions including hand gestures, head movements and facial expressions. This course examines the notion of creativity in multimodal communication, from two perspectives. The first is creativity within multimodal communication itself, i.e., what makes a gesture, or combination of speech and gesture, creative? The second is the interaction between multimodal communication and creativity elsewhere, i.e., how does speech and gesture production influence performance in various creative tasks, and vice versa? After a brief general introduction to gesture studies, the bulk of the course will consist of readings and classroom discussions of recent work exploring these issues.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
