230649 Literature from Chicagoland (S) (WiSe 2015/2016)

Contents, comment

This seminar investigates the Chicago cityscape construed in a selection of 20th century fictional works from/set in Chicago. Each of them presents the megacity in a different way, sometimes, for instance, setting the focus on segregation and the civil rights struggle, as in Lorraine Hansberry's famous play "A Raisin in the Sun", moral and gender boundaries, as in Theodore Dreiser’s “Sister Carrie”, or on the life of immigrants in the world's formerly largest meatpacking industry, as in Upton Sinclair's famous novel "The Jungle". With particular focus on these developments and the literary Chicago Renaissance, we will discuss how "Chicago the Beautiful" – an image formed by the 1893 World's Fair – is criticized and de-constructed in the narrative texts, shedding light upon the power that stories hold for the construction of a city – real and imagined.
