Aristoteles‘ Nikomachische Ethik ist ein Klassiker in der Geschichte ethischen Denkens. Im Mittelpunkt des Buchs steht die Frage, was ein gutes und glückliches menschliches Leben ausmacht. Nach Aristoteles sind die Entwicklung und Ausübung von Charakter- und Verstandestugenden entscheidend. Doch auch Themen wie Freundschaft, Willensschwäche und Lust werden ausführlich diskutiert. Aus moderner Perspektive ist interessant, dass Aristoteles keinen potentiellen Konflikt zwischen einem glücklichen und einem moralisch guten Leben zu sehen scheint. Aus diesem Grund – aber auch aus anderen Gründen – bildet Aristoteles‘ Ethik einen Kontrast zu modernen Prinzipienethiken wie etwa der Ethik Kants oder dem Utilitarismus.
