In dieser Veranstaltung spüren wir der Frage nach wie und warum sich die Wissenschaft von einer Beschäftigung für Gentleman, über eine Berufung, zu einem Beruf und letztlich auch zu einem mehr und mehr ökonomischen Mustern folgendem Unterfangen gewandelt hat. Dazu lesen und diskutieren wir u. a. Max Webers berühmten Aufsatz „Wissenschaft als Beruf“ aus dem Jahr 1917, Hans Ulrich Gumbrechts Beitrag „Die Aufgabe der Geisteswissenschaften heute“ (2004) sowie ausgewählte Kapitel aus Steven Shapins Buch „The Scientific Life. A Moral History of a Late Modern Vocation“ (2008).
Die Veranstaltung ist als lektüreintensives Seminar konzipiert. Es wird von den TeilnehmerInnen erwartet, dass sie sog. „Textpatenschaften“ über einzelne Artikel, Beiträge oder Buchkapitel übernehmen.
