Das Seminar wird einen Überblick über die Geschichte des langen 19. Jahrhunderts bieten aus der Perspektive eines spezifischen Mediums: der Fotografie, die viele zentrale Phänomene aus der Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts aufgreift. Nach einer Einführung in die (Technik)Geschichte und den Prozess der Erfindung und Etablierung der Fotografie als „neuem visuellen Medium“ im 19. Jahrhundert, soll es im zweiten Arbeitsschritt um zeitgenössische Deutungen der Fotografie sowie theoretische Reflexionen zur Medialität von Fotografien als historischen Quellen gehen. Die dritte Arbeitsphase wird sich zentralen Sujets widmen: der Geschichte des Bürgertums, sozialen Bewegungen, Industrialisierung und Urbanisierung, der Auseinandersetzung mit technischen und wissenschaftlichen Innovationen, Körperkulturen sowie der Konfrontation und Begegnung mit außereuropäischen Kulturen im 19. Jahrhundert. Im Seminar werden wöchentlich Texte gelesen und diskutiert sowie Quellen zum 19. Jahrhundert interpretiert.
